Q Awards for Sedbergh Butchers

Presentation By T V Chef Paul Rankin

Steadmans of Sedbergh, Cumbria have won 11 of top product awards in the Guild of Q Butchers 2007 Smithfield Awards.

The Smithfield Awards are among the most prestigious in the meat industry and a true indication of excellence. Products were subjected to detailed assessment and sampling by a panel of independent judges. Almost 600 products from Q members throughout the U K were assessed by a panel of experts at MLC Headquarters at Milton Keynes.

Steadmans won seven gold, three silver and one bronze with perfect marks going to their Black Pudding, and Cooked Belly Pork.
Gold award winning products were
Haggis, Spicey Lamb Grillsticks, Cooked Belly Pork, Pressed Ox Tongue, Crispy Duck in Plum Sauce, Black Pudding Loaf, and Cottage Pie with a Leek and Potato Topping.
Silver Awards went to Brandy and Herb Pate, Huntsman's Pie and 1lb Pork Pie.

The awards were presented to Garth Steadman at a special lunch in Butchers Hall, London, on November 13 by T V chef and restaurateur Paul Rankin.

Garth said: We try to enter different product's every year and to get 11 awards from 12 new entries is a credit to our staff. "As a member of the Guild of Q Butchers we aspire to the highest standards in the trade and to win a Smithfield Award is a tremendous honour. We were thrilled to do so well in the 2007 product evaluation and our customers can look forward in 2008 to enjoying some more award-winning products!"

Over 600 entries from Q butchers all over Britain were judged for the Smithfield Awards which were sponsored by EBLEX, the English Beef and Lamb Executive, BPEX British Pork Executive, and food chain suppliers Dalziel.

Organised by the Countryside Alliance in association with the Farmers Weekly and The Daily Telegraph, Guild of Q Butcher Steadman's of Sedbergh were voted Best Local Food Retailer in the North West of England 2007/8

Steadman's were one of twelve retailers to win out of 2,500 nominations

Owner Garth Steadman together with his wife Jean, are invited to London to attend a reception for the winners at the Cholmondeley room at The House of Lords on February 6th.

Garth Steadman said: "We are absolutely delighted at the news. To get through to the national final is an achievement in itself and to win the regional section is fantastic. We were told that our win is a testament to our importance within our community.

It is good to be recognised for our commitment to sourcing local produce and supporting local producers

"The certificate will have pride of place on our shop wall amongst other awards we have earned this year. It's excellent for our customers to see. It reinforces why they have chosen to shop at a high quality independent butcher." It is also good for moral for the staff who contribute to the success of the business and it's achievments.
